This fungus plays an important role in forests by breaking down dead wood. It has also been used in traditional medicine, and scientists continue to study its natural compounds.

Where does it live?

Grows in overlapping clusters on fallen logs and dead tree trunks.

Where the spores form

Poroid. Spores develop inside tiny tubes that open onto the surface as pores. Look for a surface covered with many tiny holes.

Did you know?

The colourful rings on its cap look like the feathers of a wild turkey's tail. No two mushrooms have exactly the same pattern.
